The influence of gender on

EV adoption

Significance

Only 28% of US EVs registrants are women, despite constituting 41.2% of all vehicle registrants (S&P Global, 2024), 50% of licensed drivers (USDOT, 2024), and 62% of new car buyers (Cars.com, 2020). This reality contrasts with other research showing that women tend to have higher levels of environmental concern and engage in other pro-environmental behaviors more often than do men. What explains the gender gap in EV purchase decisions? And what can be done to narrow the gap and gain EV market share among women?

Research goals

Investigate the influences of (1) gender and (2) household dynamics, including child chaufeurring roles, on EV interest and adoption

Project phase

We have gathered five datasets on this topic to date and have a manuscript in preparation. We are continuing this line of research by examining perceptions of prototypical EV drivers.

One of our datasets is a large administrative dataset (N>70,000) from the California Air Resources Board, which surveyed EV rebate recipients from 2012-2022. These data can likely answer many questions that we have not investigated. Please reach out if you are interested in discussing a potential collaboration.
